Visiting Professor M. A.Vasiliev (Lebedev Phys. Inst., Moscow) will deliver 6 lectures on Elements of higher-spin gauge theory in November.


The purpose of this small lecture series is to give an introduction into the theory of higher-spin gauge fields in four space-time dimensions. We will begin by reviewing Fronsdal's gauge-invariant models for free massless fields of arbitrary spin. Then, to transition towards a nonlinear description, the frame-like formulation for massless fields as well as the simplest higher-spin algebra will be introduced. Finally, the concept of unfolded dynamics will be discussed with the end goal of presenting the unfolded formulation of the free and nonlinear higher-spin equations.

About the Speaker

Mikhail Vasiliev Professor Professor Mikhail Vasiliev is one of the creators of higher-spin gauge theory, which is one of the most active research areas in modern theoretical high-energy physics. He received his PhD in 1980 and his habilitation degree in 1992, both from the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, one of the largest Russian research centres (and home to seven Nobel Laureates). From 2000 until 2012 Professor Vasiliev was Head of the Theory Division of the Lebedev Physical Institute. At present, he is a Principal Researcher and Leader of the Quantum Field Theory Group at the Lebedev Physical Institute. In 2014 Professor Vasiliev held the prestigious honorary Kramers Chair for Theoretical Physics at the University Utrecht. Since the establishment of the Kramers Chair in 1975, there have been 31 occupants, the first of whom was the Nobel Laureate Eugene Wigner. In 2016 Professor Vasiliev was awarded the I. E. Tamm Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Mikhail Vasiliev is famous for the nonlinear equations describing the dynamics of massless higher-spin fields, also known as the Vasiliev equations.
