Maurice was 93, was a foundation member of the Society and had held positions in mathematics at Sydney University (temporary lecturer), Adelaide University (lecturer and senior lecturer), the University of Melbourne (professor) and Bond University (adjunct professor) between 1952 and 2005. He was trained as an engineer at the University of Western Australia and was a fighter pilot in the Pacific during World War 2. His father, Sir Norman Brearley, was a fighter pilot in World War 1, and was granted the first commercial aviation licence in Australia in 1921 (QANTAS was the second licence, granted in 1922).
