National Symposium: Connecting Women in STEMM

This event is hosted by Women in Science Australia. There will be a variety of wonderful speakers, including WIMSIG Member Assoc. Prof. Birgit Loch.

The Innovators' Tea Party

This free event aims to inspire high school aged girls to consider a career in STEM by allowing them to interact with a diverse range of mentors. It is also a wonderful volunteering opportunity for any woman in STEM who is interested in giving back to the community.


AWM Workshop & Poster Session at SIAM 2016

AMSI Winter School 2016

The AMSI Winter School 2016 on Biological and Environmental Modelling is run in collaboration with The University of Queensland and is designed for PhD students and researchers in the mathematical sciences and related disciplines.

AMSI travel grants provide full or partial support for students and early career researchers. Applications for travel grants close on June 5.

Choose Maths grants are also available for women to attend AMSI flagship events such as the Winter School. Choose Maths grants may include support for children related travel expenses.


IWM Annual Conference

This conference is in continuation of a successful series of events, beginning in 2012, organised by the Indian Women and Mathematics (IWM).

The conference aims to bring together women students, college and university teachers and early-career researchers with mathematicians, especially women mathematicians, working at the frontiers of Mathematics, to exchange mathematical ideas and share their views.

A major goal of this event is to enable junior women mathematicians to interact with their senior colleagues, both individually and in small groups, as well as to present their work.


Diversity in Astronomy Workshop - June 2016

Many of the topics at the Diversity in Astronomy Workshop are relevant to anyone in the sciences. This 2-day workshop (June 28-29, 2016) will be held in the School of Physics at The University of Melbourne and will focus on the topics of unconscious bias, institutional change, diversity via gender, cultural and sexual identity and mindfulness.

Women in Mathematics Lunch at ANZIAM 2016

The Women in Mathematics Lunch is held to showcase the prominent female mathematicians at ANZIAM 2016. The lunch provides an opportunity to learn about the careers of the female plenary speakers, as well as to delve into discussions on topics affecting all mathematical careers worldwide.

This year, we'll be hearing from a diverse group of speakers: Vivien Kirk, Petra Kuhnert and Karen Willcox. For a prelude into what's in store, see the ANZIAM 2016 Q&A page.

Lunch (including tea/coffee and cake) is free to all registered ANZIAM 2016 attendees, and people of any gender are welcome.

Women in Mathematical Sciences Dinner

This is joint event of the 60th Annual Meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS) and the Australian Statistical Conference 2016, organised by the AustMS Women in Mathematics Special Interest Group (WIMSIG). It is the largest dinner yet!

The dinner will feature speeches and Q&A from some prominent women, including plenary speakers.

The sponsors are: Professor Nalini Joshi through her ARC Georgina Sweet Australian Laureate Fellowship; ACEMS; ANU; and the Australian Signals Directorate.


WIMSIG General Meeting

At the 2016 AustMS meeting in Canberra, WIMSIG will have a general business meeting before the Women in Mathematical Sciences dinner.

This meeting is a chance for members and friends of WIMSIG to meet the Executive Committee and discuss things of interest. We will have reports from Cheryl E. Praeger Travel Award recipients, Melissa Tacy and Chaitanya Oehmigara. Guest speakers include Inge Koch with an update on the AMSI Choose Maths project, Birgit Loch with a story of success at Swinburne, and Sally Zanic leading a discussion about the opportunities presented by MATRiX.

27th Behrend Memorial Lecture

The University of Melbourne is privileged to be hosting Prof. Michèle Vergne in the week of August 3-7. She has made seminal contributions in many areas, including representation theory, algebraic geometry, and harmonic analysis. Among many honours, she has been elected to the French Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was a plenary speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2006. She has also been very involved in the popularisation of mathematics in France.

Prof. Vergne has graciously accepted to give this year's Behrend Memorial Lecture, aimed at the general public. Her talk Linear Inequalities will take place at 6pm on Tuesday 4 August. For full details, please see http://www.ms.unimelb.edu.au/~aghitza/behrend.


Workshop on Geometric Quantisation - July 2015

  • The IGA/AMSI Workshop on Geometric Quantisation will be held at The University of Adelaide from July 27-31, 2015.
  • The workshop features a large number of well-known international speakers, including several female invited speakers.
  • A highlight of the workshop will be a talk by the world-renowned female mathematician Prof Michèle Vergne.

SEquences and Their Applications (SETA) — Nov 24-28, 2014

  • The international conference on SEquences and Their Applications (SETA) is a biennial conference series devoted to the mathematical theory of sequences used in wireless communications, cryptography and their applications.
