With great regret I inform members of the unexpected death last week of Dr Alan Woods, Adjunct Professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Western Australia.

The 10th Engineering Mathematics and Applications Conference, EMAC2011, will be held at the University of Technology, Sydney, from 4th–7th December 2011.

The 2012 Mathematics & Statistics in Industry Study Group will be hosted by RMIT University, Melbourne, from Sunday 5th February to Friday 10th February 2012.

Nominations for the 2011 AustMS Best Paper Prize close on 30th June

This year's Mahler Lecturer is Peter Sarnak, of Princeton University. He will be visiting various Australian universities throughout August 2011.

Seventeen of Australia’s leading scientists were honoured on 23 March by election to the Australian Academy of Science. Four of these are mathematical scientists.

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has decided to award the Abel Prize for 2011 to John Milnor, Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Stony Brook University, New York “for pioneering discoveries in topology, geometry and algebra”.

Prof. Darren Crowdy is plenary speaker at the ANZIAM 2011 Conference (30 January – 3 February 2011), he will undertake a lecture tour around member universities after the conference.
