This year opened with the publication of the review Mathematical Sciences: Adding to Australia.
The aim of the review was ``to investigate research activities in the mathematical sciences and provision of high level mathematical services to the nation.'' The 120 page report presents a detailed analysis of the current situation concerning advanced mathematical enquiry and its applications in Australia and presents its conclusions in the form of four principal findings and 20 recommendations.
Each recommendation is marked for the attention of the relevant players - ARC, AVCC, deans, heads of departments, professional societies or ourselves as individual mathematical scientists.
The report ranges over a broad range of aspects of the mathematical sciences in the nation. Australian mathematicians should endeavour to consider the report and its findings because the authors have produced a thorough, well written document that can contribute to planning and development in mathematics departments across Australia.
