HIGHER DEGREES IN MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS COMPLETED IN AUSTRALIA 1992

Peter Petocz

The following graph and tables set out details regarding those who completed the requirement for the award of a higher degree in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics at an Australian university during the 1992 academic year. The actual conferring of the degree may have taken place later. Also listed are the names of the candidates and the titles of their theses (as supplied to me).

I am using as my definition of university `any institution accepted as such by the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee': this leads to the inclusion of Ballarat University College, University of Central Queensland, University of Southern Queensland and Swinburne University of Technology.

On the graph on page 2, the numbers of research degrees are compared to the total numbers of students in higher education. Both doctorates and research masters seem to be on the increase.

The figures for higher education students were obtained in the following way. From 1980 onwards they are taken from Selected Higher Education Statistics (published by DEET); from 1969-79 from Year Book Australia as a sum of university students and students at colleges of advanced education (and at teachers' colleges when they were not included in the CAE figures); from 1959-68 as 1.5 times the numbers of university students.

Continued thanks are extended to all those who cooperate in the collection of these data. Forms carefully and accurately filled in and returned promptly enable high-quality data to be available to the mathematical community within a relatively short time.
