The major activity this year was AEMC94, the 1st Biennial Engineering Mathematics Conference, which was held at the Townhouse Hotel, Melbourne during 11 to 13 July, 1994. The underwriting by the Institution of Engineers, Australia was a significant contributing factor to the success of the conference and further cemented the strong link between ANZIAM and IE Aust. The organising committee consisted of
Chairman: Dr Joseph Steiner, Swinburne University of Technology
Secretary: Mr Lindsay Evans, Monash University
Treasurer: Associate Professor Alan Easton, Swinburne University of Technology
Committee members:
Administrator: Ms Helen Giannakis
Typography: Mr Desmond Fernandes
The conference proved to be a tremendous success and, in its first year of operation, attracted 130 delegates from 17 countries. Attendees came from industry as well as academia with a good mix of mathematicians, engineers and educationalists, and included a number of representatives from TAFE Colleges and students. The conference theme was The Role of Mathematics in Modern Engineering . The discussions at the sessions and the exchange of opinions in the collegial contacts promoted the knowledge and experience in this field of great importance.
The conference was opened by Ivan Deveson, AO, Chairman, The Seven Netowrk and Chancellor of RMIT, who spoke on The challenge of change .
This was followed by short presentations by Noel Barton, Chairman, ANZIAM and Brian Lloyd, AM, Immediate Past President IE Aust.
Keynote invited speakers were
The daily program consisted of a morning of plenary sessions and an afternoon of three parallel sessions for contributed papers. There were approximately 80 contributed papers and these were grouped in the four categories Industrial Mathematics, Mathematical Modelling, Mathematical techniques and Mathematical Education of Engineers. The refereed proceedings of the conference will be published by Studentlitteratur, Sweden.
An article by M.D.J. Barry and L.R. Mustoe on the conference follows this report.
To commemorate the inauguration of the AEMC conference series, the first biennial EMG awards were presented to Professor Lennart Rade, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, the Chairman of SEFI Mathematics Working Group and to Professor Murray Gillin, Swinburne University of Technology, Past President of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
As well as sponsoring the overseas invited speakers, we also assisted the participation of two post-graduate students, one from Australia and one from New Zealand.
Sponsors included:
The biennial meeting at the conclusion of the conference elected a new EMG committee which will hold office for the next two years and thanked the previous committee for their efforts in the formative years of EMG, and in particular the co-founders of EMG, Joseph Steiner and Alan Easton. The new committee consists of
Executive officers:
Chair: Dr Joseph Steiner, Swinburne University of Technology
Secretary: Mr Nian Li, Swinburne University of Technology
Treasurer: Dr Gary Fitzgerald, RMIT
Committee members:

Nian Li has accepted the position of Secretary from Dr David Fletcher of the University of Sydney who had to decline his nomination.
Discussions have been initiated with the Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering, University of Sydney to host AEMC96 from 15 July to 17 July 1996.
I wish to thank ANZIAM for the financial and moral support of the Engineering Mathematics Group and the Institution of Engineers Australia, for taking the financial risk of underwriting the conference. Special thanks to the School of Mathematical Sciences of Swinburne University of Technology for their strong support throughout the planning and running of the conference and to my dear colleague Associate Professor Alan Easton without whose help the conference would not have eventuated.
