In the News section of this issue there is (a) a call for nominations for membership of the Council of the Australian Mathematical Society (p.41), and (b) a notice advertising that the Society has funds available to sponsor special interest meetings (p.40).
Australian mathematics is well regarded in the world because we have produced some fine mathematicians, the Society publishes some excellent international journals, and, judging by various conference reports published in the Gazette , the Society promotes a wide range of mathematical activity around the nation.
However, the success of the Society's activites depends mostly on the professional contributions of its members to various activities.
If you would like to make a contribution to the mathematical profession in Australia, there are details of opportunites in this issue.
This issue of the Gazette also contains some excellent book reviews. The Gazette is trying to establish an international reputation for good reviews of mathematics books. Already one major publisher has made it clear to the editors that the Gazette is regarded as an important journal for reviews of mathematical publications. In this issue, the review by Neville Smythe (pp.34--37) shows that we don't mind long reviews. However, in our search for books to review and mathematicians to write reviews, we would like to hear from readers who are keen to write reviews. Heads of Departments may wish to draw this to the attention of colleagues who may be interested in this important work.
Members are invited to apply for accreditation in line with the optional scheme described in the Gazette , 20 (3) (1993) 91--95. A copy of the Application Form, and a description of the scheme including current fees, have been been included with this issue of the Gazette .
