The citation which accompanied the award was as follows.

Professor Baddeley has conducted outstanding research in the closely related areas of stereology, spatial statistics, stochastic geometry and statistical image analysis. These areas have attracted a great deal of mathematical attention in recent years as well as finding important applications to many contemporary areas of science and technology. Professor Baddeley's deep knowledge of mathematics, statistical science and computational algorithms has enabled him to develop statistical methods for analysing data which exhibit geometric patterns. His work on spatial and stochastic-geometric problems is ranked among the finest in the world in these areas. These contributions have been highly original and innovative and have had a genuine impact. As one assessor wrote: "He is truly one of the scientific leaders in this area".
