Election priorities for the Mathematical Sciences

With regret I inform members that Peter Pockley, the very early founder of the ABC Science Unit in the 1960s, died peacefully on 11th August.

With deep regret I inform members that Dr Laci Kovács of the ANU passed away early this morning, 28th July, after a massive heart attack.

Professor Rodney Baxter FRS has been awarded a 2013 Royal Medal of the Royal Society for his remarkable exact solutions of fundamental models in statistical mechanics.

This year's Mahler Lecturer is Akshay Venkatesh, of Stanford University. He will be visiting various Australian universities throughout September and October 2013.

The ARC announced yesterday the following awards of Laureate Fellowships.

Jenny Henderson from the University of Sydney has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen's Birthday 2013 Honours List, for service to education through the promotion of the study of mathematics.

Council remains keen to explore ways in which Australia can host the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2022 or 2026.

The Royal Society of London has announced a list of new Fellows, which includes Professor Terry Speed.

We are sadddened to report the passing on 30 March 2013 of Associate Professor Neil Cameron, who was Head of the (then) Department of Mathematics & Statistics prior to his retirement in December 1997.

The USA National Academy of Sciences has announced the election of 84 new members and 21 foreign associates from 14 countries in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Professor Peter Hall is one of the 21 new foreign associates.

Members may be interested in this initiative, funded by the prize for the Poincaré Conjecture.

The Steering Committee for the Decadal Plan for the Mathematical Sciences has extended the deadline for written submissions on the themes identified by its subcommittees to 30 April 2013.
