Remuneration package valued at up to $64,761.66. Base salary ranges
from $31,884 to $58,692, plus leave loading and employer's contribution
to superannuation. Base salary rates above the minimum are available
depending on experience.
Norfolk Island is
approximately 1,800km northeast of Sydney in the South Pacific Ocean.
The school is funded by the Norfolk Island Government which has purchased
the K-12 curriculum from the NSW Department of Education and Training.
Traditional education delivery is augmented in the senior years by distance
education and on-line programs. All members of teaching staff are appointed
by merit selection procedures and remain employees of the NSW DET. Staff
possess high levels of expertise and professional commitment. The school
has a proud tradition and heritage and both the Island Government and
local community take a keen interest in educational matters. Current
enrolment is 310 (190 in K-6 and 120 in 7-12), with a teaching staff
of 25.
Position Criteria:
- Accreditation
to teach mathematics 7-12.
- Willingness to
teach computing studies 7-10 and software design and development,
and to act as school computer coordinator.
- Understanding
of the needs of gifted and talented students.
- Awareness of
gender equity issues, including strategies for both girls and boys.
- Capacity to integrate
technology into effective classroom practice.

N.B. Appointment
to all positions is for a three-year period. At the conclusion of tenure,
teachers hold nominated transfer rights to schools in the Tweed Heads/Ballina,
Lismore, and Clarence/Coffs Harbour Districts; return transfer to original
Districts is also negotiable. Working conditions are basically the same
as in the NSW teaching service, including salary levels; however, teachers
are expected not to take LSL or LWOP during their tenure. Income tax
is not payable on income earned on Norfolk Island. The Norfolk Island
Government will pay airfares at the commencement and conclusion of appointment.
A relocation allowance is also paid both ways. Should teachers terminate
their appointment before the prescribed time, they may be required to
refund expenses incurred in their transfer, and forfeit eligibility
for paid return to NSW.
