Abbotsleigh enjoys an enviable reputation for the excellent standards its students achieve in mathematics. The Mathematics Department at Abbotsleigh is a cooperative and dedicated team of twelve staff. They are an experienced and highly motivated team who bring a diversity of skills to the faculty. They are assisted by a Special Needs Department who provide in-class support for students who do not immediately understand some mathematical concepts. Our gifted and talented students are encouraged to extend their ideas through a range of challenge and enrichment tasks. Each student is encouraged to achieve her potential within the full range of Mathematics courses from Years 7 to 12. Incorporating outcome based reporting across a variety of assessment tasks for all year groups is a significant area for review in 2001. Integrating technology into the curriculum, particularly in the General Mathematics course, is an important focus of the Department. This will include working within the Abbotsleigh Virtual Private Network.

The Mathematics Department offers tutorials to students four afternoons each week of the school year. This unique system of tutorials is of significant help to students who have been absent from class, require further clarification of concepts or who simply choose to complete homework in the knowledge that assistance is easily accessible. This structure is particularly important when catering for the individual needs of the students and is well utilised by both boarders and day girls.

The position will involve teaching a range of classes, will include Year 11 classes up to Extension 1 level and may involve working within our tutorial structure. As Abbotsleigh moves to longer teaching periods in 2001, knowledge and understanding of effective teaching strategies to cater for longer lessons would be beneficial.
