A challenging opportunity exists for a Research Scientist who will undertake and supervise research in bioinformatics and provide bioinformatics expertise and support to the plant genomics, molecular marker and gene technologies programmes of the Plant Biotechnology Centre, Agriculture Victoria - Bundoora. This information will be consistent with the interests and resources of the Plant Biotechnology Centre and Agriculture Victoria.

The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate:

• appropriate degree in science with extensive post-graduate experience and training at PhD level or equivalent qualifications;
• practical experience in the establishment of DNA and protein sequence databases, in computer-assisted sequence analyses, in development of algorithms for DNA sequence analysis and significant practical experience with different bioinformatics systems, including ANIGS;
• wide-ranging knowledge and a significant documented record of achievements in bioinformatics and its application to genome research;
• significant information technology skills and experience across a range of platforms including PC, Macintosh and UNIX based systems and web applications;
• experience in the application of bioinformatics to large-scale throughput genome research projects
• experience in the supervision of staff and the management of research and development projects, involving commercial and collaborative research partners; and
• high level capacity to communicate with quality and authority, in both written and oral form, to a diversity of audiences and to publish, patent or licence the results of scientific research.
