We are looking for two PhD students to work on developing and implementing algorithms for ``Autonomous Vehicle Coordination in Fully Automated Container Terminals.''

Project summary:

With the recent advances in autonomous vehicle development, autonomous materials handling in complex and dynamic environments has become a reality, as evidenced by the opening of the fully automated container terminal (located in Brisbane, Australia) by Patrick Stevedores Holdings in 2005. An autonomous materials handling system, however, requires efficient algorithms for allocating tasks to the vehicles, planning their collision-free trajectories and replanning vehicle motions in response to unexpected events such as breakdowns. This project aims to develop and implement practically deployable strategies and algorithms for Simultaneous Task Allocation and Motion Coordination (STAMC) of a large fleet of autonomous vehicles in complex and dynamic material handling environments.

Two PhD students (stipend $25,118p.a) with mechatronics and computer systems/software background will be recruited by this project:

One PhD student will be engaged in research on modelling and algorithm development for simultaneous task allocation and motion coordination of a large fleet of autonomous vehicles.

The second PhD student’s research will mainly focus on developing intelligent algorithms for replanning of a large team of autonomous vehicles under various unexpected events and uncertainties.
