Operations Research Applications in Capacity Constrained Resource Planning in Hospitals

Summary

Health care systems are challenged in recent years to deliver high quality care with limited resources. Operating theatre is one of the most critical and costly hospital resources since a high percentage of the hospital admissions is due to surgical interventions. The surgical planning and scheduling processes are very complex tasks, due to the involvement of the several constraints including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, recovery beds, ward beds and ICU. This research project will build the optimisation tools to assist the hospital management to plan and schedule the operating theatres for elective and emergency surgeries while the available resources are given. Scholarship: a stipend of $28,392 per annum plus $10,000 extra research support (industry contribution) per annum
