Posted on: Wed Jun 26 2013

A PhD studentship is available at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Melbourne or the School of Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences, RMIT University from January 2014. The studentship is associated with a recently awarded project on the Probability of Bushfire Ignition and Escalation.

The aim of this project is to develop probabilistic fire ignition and escalation models to support riskbased operational and strategic decision making by fire and land management agencies. It forms part of a suite of research projects that are being managed by the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre on behalf of the Department of Environment and Primary Industries. The project is being undertaken by researchers from the University of Melbourne and RMIT University, in collaboration with Canadian-based researchers from the University of Toronto and Wilfrid Laurier University.

Applicants with an interest in one or more of the following topics are encouraged to apply:

  • Applied probability
  • Statistical modelling
  • Stochastic processes

Applicants should have an Honours or Masters degree in any field of Science or Engineering or equivalent experience and must satisfy university entry requirements. The research project will be jointly supervised by Professor Peter Taylor (University of Melbourne), Professor John Hearne (RMIT University) and Dr James Minas (RMIT University).

The studentship will provide a top-up scholarship of AU$ 10,000 per annum for three years, plus additional funding to attend conferences and workshops. Applicants must already hold, or obtain an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent scholarship.

Potential applicants should contact Dr James Minas (james.minas@rmit.edu.au).
