Start date: A negotiable time after 1 March 2006.
Scholarship: NZD$22,000 per year (tax-free) plus up to
NZD$4,000 per year in fees. Note that international students pay
only domestic fees; the domestic fees for 2005 were NZD$3,987.
Qualifications required:
- Bachelors Honours degree (preferably first class) or Masters
degree in mathematics
- A background in algebra/algebraic geometry/algebraic
groups is desirable.
A PhD student is sought to work on a project in Algebraic Groups
entitled "A geometric approach to reductive algebraic groups". The
project is funded by a Marsden grant held by Dr Ben Martin, Prof
Gerhard Roehrle (Southampton) and Michael Bate (Oxford). The aim
is to use ideas from geometric invariant theory to study
completely reducible subgroups of, and the building associated to,
a reductive algebraic group. This project builds on previous joint
work of Bate, Martin and Roehrle.
