The School of Water Research is an internationally recognised environmental engineering research (fundamental, applied and commercial) and teaching (undergraduate and postgraduate) organisation with a large and diverse research programme in lakes, estuaries and coastal seas. The School currently undertakes research projects in Australia, Germany, USA, Italy, Israel, Japan, Argentina and Brazil.

The Contract Research Group, which undertakes contract research for commercial clients, is currently expanding and is seeking an enthusiastic research professional. The successful applicant must have a higher degree (PhD/Masters) with a focus on aquatic ecosystems and water quality. A sound knowledge of environmental fluid dynamics and quantitative ecological analysis (numerical modelling) is desirable. A good publications record demonstrating experience is also desirable. The School has developed a suite of hydrodynamic and ecological computer models that are key tools in the research undertaken by the Contract Research Group. Experience in the use of computer models and/or programming experience is therefore desirable. If the applicant does not possess such experience a willingness to learn should be expressed. The successful applicant will take the role of principal investigator for research projects, reporting to the Manager Contract Research. In this capacity they will lead the research and be responsible for day to day management of commercial research contracts, including client liaison, report writing and coordination of the project team. The successful applicant must demonstrate highly developed communication skills, the ability to work independently and the ability to meet deadlines.

The appointment is based in Perth but may require travel within Australia and overseas for up to a month at a time. The position is for two years. Further employment will be dependent on securing funds and further demand for the research programme beyond the initial period.
