Professor in Applied Statistics

Applicants are invited
for the position of Associate Professor in Statistics in the Department
of Mathematics and Statistics. This is a challenging and exciting position
and will allow the successful applicant to provide leadership in emerging
areas of applied statistics and mathematical finance, and enhance interdisciplinary
links within the university and with industry.
Curtin University
of Technology is a multi-campus institution founded as the Western Australian
Institute of Technology in 1967. The main campus is situated 6km south
of Perth. The university has over 31,000 students enrolled in some 200
courses.
The Department of
Mathematics and Statistics has 16 full-time academic staff. It offers
a number of strong and vibrant programs including actuarial science,
mathematics and finance, and double degrees with computing, finance
and education. The department also provides service teaching to Health
Sciences, Applied Sciences and Engineering. In addition, the School
has an active postgraduate research program with over 25 students enrolled
for MSc and PhD. The School has strengths in Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics,
Combinatorial Optimization, Operations Research, Industrial Modelling
and Optimization and Statistics.
The Statistics Group
within the department has research interests in Time Series, Stochastic
Processes and Statistical Modelling. It has strong links with industry
through applied statistical consulting. The department aims to build
on these strengths and develop the areas of actuarial and mathematical
finance.
Applicants should
have a record of distinguished achievements in one or more applied areas
of statistics as evidenced by publications in leading refereed international
journals. A high level of success in attracting industrial research
consultancy contracts is essential. Further, a record of achievement
in gaining competitive research grants is desirable. The appointee will
be expected to provide leadership in both research and teaching. He/she
will take an active role in the provision of Statistics service teaching
across the University. In addition, the appointee is expected to bring
in substantial consultancy funding and hence to establish a strong reputation
for the Departmental Statistical consultancy unit and to contribute
to the R&D efforts of the Department. He/she should have a strong
national and international network in research collaboration among higher
learning institutions both in Australia and overseas and be able to
utilize this strength to help attract international students.
