Post-Doctoral Fellowship
CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products
Fuel Moisture Modeller
Hobart Tas
Reference: FFP2002/10
2 years
$52K - $58K plus superannuation

Bushfire causes significant loss, disruption and trauma in Australia, and CSIRO is undertaking research in areas of fire behaviour and management, building designs, and fire ecology to help address and prevent some of the outcomes of bushfires.

To aid us in this research we are now seeking a dynamic Post-Doctoral Fellow with a record of research achievement in environmental or natural resource modelling.

To be considered for this Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship you will require a PhD in forestry, natural resource or biological science, mathematics or atmospheric modelling, and no more that three years relevant experience since conferral of the doctorate. Well developed modelling skills and experience in data mining, organisation and analysis, together with a sound theoretical base are essential for this two year fellowship.

As the successful applicant you will join our multi-disciplinary research team which is currently developing a national bushfire behaviour prediction system. Your role will require you to develop a new research project or area and contribute to relevant research in the team, which includes fire behaviour scientists and bushfire physicists. You will
also be expected to interact with other scientists in the field of hydrology, atmospheric science, remote sensing and eco-physiology to investigate micro-, meso- and large-scale variability in fuel moisture. You will contribute specialist understanding of fuel moisture function and contribute to the development, application, calibration and validation of
predictive models of fire behaviour.

You will be located at our laboratories in Hobart. This will ensure integration with both Forestry and Forest Products’ scientists working on process based forest growth models, and also a scientific team within CSIRO Marine Research who are investigating seasonal climate forecasting. Your work will also involve interaction with local land management agencies and fire agencies.
