Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry)
Department of Mathematics & Statistics
University of Melbourne

The Australian Research Council has awarded a Strategic Partnership with Industry Research and Training (SPIRT) Grant to provide an Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) for full-time studies leading to a PhD degree commencing in 2001. The stipend offered is $(A)22,283 tax free per year for three years. Other benefits include HECS exemption, a relocation award if required and a thesis allowance. As a condition of the award, you must be an Australian citizen (or have permanent resident status).

The industry partner is Colloidal Dynamics (Sydney), developers of the electroacoustic chemical instrument: the Acoustisizer. Electroacoustic methods, which detect pressure waves from dense colloidal suspensions subject ot oscillating electric fields, are increasingly common. The project aims to broaden the range of materials that can usefully be characterized by electroacoustic methods, by extending the current theory required to interpret electroacoustic signals.

You should have an Honours 1 or high 2A (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics or Physical Chemistry, preferably with strengths in computational and mathematical methods.
