The School of Mathematics at UNSW is seeking to appoint a Associate Lecturer (Visiting
Teaching Fellow) for the 2003 academic year. The purpose of the position is to enhance
existing links between UNSW and secondary schools, providing an opportunity for sharing
ideas about the circumstances of first year students and approaches to teaching.

The duties of the position include conducting tutorials in first year mathematics subjects
for up to 11 hours per week, and assisting in subject assessment, administration and
curriculum development. The successful appointee will also be required to provide a
report on their experiences and impressions of the teaching and curriculum at the
conclusion of the appointment. According to the appointee’s interest and capacity, they
may also deliver lectures and engage in mathematical scholarship or research.

The position would be suitable for an experienced mathematics teacher with strong
mathematical training and an interest and recent involvement in teaching advanced
mathematics units in years 11 and 12, and an understanding of equity and diversity
principles.

A departmental teacher selected will need to apply to the Director, Personnel Operations
for leave-without-pay to be granted for the period of the Fellowship. This is not regarded as
leave-without pay for personal reasons.

The salary range is A$38,576 - A$52,324 per year depending on qualifications and
experience, with supplementation if necessary to match the NSW Government Teachers
Award Agreement. This is a fixed term position for 12 months beginning January 2003.
