Trainee APS Technical Observer

The Bureau of Meteorology is looking for people to maintain its meteorological observations program throughout Australia and its Territories. The positions involve using scientific instrumentation, computers, radars and other specialist equipment to collect and record meteorological data for climate, forecasting and aviation purposes.

Qualifications: To become a Trainee APS Technical (Observer) you must have completed a Dimploma, or equivalent, by the end of this current year, with studies (at least to first year level) in one or more of the following areas: a physical science, mathematics or computing. Dimplomas in areas such as computing, electronics, environmental science, engineering or geology may be suitable.

Attributes: You must have personal qualities of flexibility, independence and resourcefulness and be able to work in isolated locations. You must be willing to work rostered shifts and to work alone.

Eligibility: To be eligible for engagement to the Australian Public Service, you must hold Australian Citizenship. However, if you hold permanent resident status and have applied, or intend to apply, for citizenship, you may be engaged on probation pending the granting of citizenship.

Training: You will undertake a specialised course which is conducted at the Bureau of Meteorology Training Centre in Melbourne, followed by on-the-job training at a Bureau meteorological office.

Salary: During training the salary will be $30,694 pa (adult). Junior rates for trainees aged 20 and under apply. On successful completion of training, you will advance to Technical Officer Level 2 with salary increasing to $36,642 and ranging up to $39,547 pa.
