APS Level 6 - Professional Officer Class 2 Location:
Model Development Group
Bureau of Meteorology
Position No. 1633

This position is a 3 year term appointment.

The position is within the Model Development Group of BMRC. Under limited direction, the officer will be required to undertake research and development on the representation of moist processes in the BMRC Atmospheric Modelling system. The work will specifically target tropical cyclone prediction, but will have general application to both regional and global prediction. Initial development will be on an explicit cloud microphysics package. Eventually a generalised and coupled representation of convection and explicit clouds is planned.

The appointee will be required to:

(a) enhance and test existing system components,

(b) develop new, innovative representations of cloud processes,

(c) validate these schemes against appropriate observational data sets,

(d) test and then assist with operational implementation of new schemes,

(e) apply the techniques in strategic research studies of TC behaviour, and

(f) develop important links with outside agencies.

To facilitate this research, liaison and collaboration with the Data Assimilation and Weather Forecasting Groups at BMRC, as well as external national and international organisations is necessary.

Selection Criteria
Important:

1. Demonstrated research ability and experience in the development and application of components of an advanced numerical prediction system, particularly representation of moist processes.

2. Experience in the use of detailed models of the atmosphere.

3. Knowledge of dynamical meteorology and the theory of moist processes.

4. Experience with scientific computer programming and working knowledge of FORTRAN and UNIX.

5. Initiative and ability to work efficiently and effectively as an individual and in a team.

6. High level of communication skills (written and oral).

7. A knowledge and understanding of the principles of Equal Employment Opportunity, Occupational Health and Safety and Industrial Democracy, and a commitment to apply them in practice.

Less Important:

8. MSc or PhD in a relevant field.
