WORK
DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Air Operations Analysis Branch
of AOD researches, develops and utilises advanced mathematical modelling,
computer simulation and analytical techniques for operational research
in a range of air operations applications. The occupant of this position
will conduct research, analysis and studies of air force and joint service
military operations, using analytical modelling techniques and simulation
techniques.
PRESCRIBED
QUALIFICATIONS: A Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of an Australian tertiary
institution, or a comparable overseas qualification, which in the opinion
of the Secretary is appropriate to the duties of the office, or other
comparable qualifications and the Secretary is satisfied that the scientist
possesses scientific research ability, scientific leadership, achievement
orientation, adaptability/flexibility skills and human relations skills.
DESIRABLE
QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate or postgraduate qualifications in one or more
of the following disciplines - Mathematics, Physics, Operations Research,
Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics, Aeronautical, Aerospace,
Mechanical, Materials, Electrical/Electronic Engineering; or Materials
Science.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge and understanding of research methods and scientific or engineering
principles in areas relevant to military operations research. Knowledge
of at least one modern computer programming language such as C++. SKILLS
AND ABILITIES: Scientific research ability including the ability to
recognise the existence and nature of a research issue and to evaluate
the issue either in relation to science generally or in relation to
the needs of defence or industry. The ability to contribute to the development
of research objectives and implement appropriate strategies within a
research project.
PERSONAL
ATTRIBUTES: Good communication and interpersonal skills, including the
ability to liaise effectively with all stake holders about research
activities and objectives, and the ability to work effectively both
as an individual scientist or engineer and as a member of a research
team. The ability to present results of scientific work both orally
and in writing and to represent the interests of the organisation, particularly
in promoting its corporate objectives and research. The ability to report
research findings to clients, including Service personnel and to interact
effectively with clients. The capacity to adapt research to changing
priorities and resources, and the ability to undertake scientific research
beyond the fields of initial university training.
JUDGEMENT/INITIATIVE:
The capacity to adapt to changes in research projects or programs and
the ability to broaden the fields of scientific research beyond those
encompassed by formal training and scientific background. Problem solving
skills and the capacity to demonstrate judgement, originality and creativity
in the establishment of new principles and their application to new
or existing processes or technologies.
SPECIAL
FEATURES: This is a designated position and the occupant will be required
to obtain or hold a security clearance. Willingness to work on defence
related tasks.
