The Special Services Unit (SSU) has a number of opportunities for forecasting staff, both ongoing and non-ongoing.

The positions may be attached to existing SSU forecasting offices in Perth, Brisbane or Sydney, but may also be available in Adelaide or Melbourne subject to the creation of a new SSU office in south-eastern Australia. Interested applicants from anywhere in Australia are encouraged to apply.

The successful applicants to the positions will be part of a team of core scientific staff of a SSU Regional Office. The function of this role is to provide a facility capable of furnishing a range of specialised meteorological services and products (which are exclusive to those provided by the Bureau as part of the basic Weather Service and those provided under incremental charging principles) to specific clients at commercial rates.

The SSU Regional Office acts as a focus for the region for specialised services provided on a commercial basis. Staff are expected to liaise with clients and potential clients to ensure standards of service are maintained and to implement the marketing plans of the SSU in developing new business.

Under the general direction of the Regional Manager, the officer will undertake the provision of specialised meteorological and related oceanographic services and will assist with planning and development.

This position is advertised under the dual classification of PO[MET] 2 / TO[MET] 4. The minimum requirements for the Technical Officer classification is a Diploma with studies in one or more of the following areas: a physical science, mathematics or computing, and/or appropriate equivalent qualifications and experience. The minimum requirement for the Professional Officer is a Bachelor of Science Degree, with a major in mathematics and physics, and/or meteorology. The final decision as to classification will be dependent on the skills, qualifications and appropriate professional expertise and experience of the successful applicants.
