Marine Fisheries Ecologist

With
other research scientists in the Sub-Program, you will be involved in
identifying, developing and conducting research for improving the assessments
and understanding of the population dynamics of pelagic fish stocks.
This
will involve research into the recruitment, population biology, spatial
dynamics and monitoring of juvenile tuna, with initial focus on southern
bluefin tuna (SBT) in the Great Australian Bight. You will be responsible
for the design and implementation of experiments and surveys for monitoring
and understanding recruitment processes in temperate and tropical tunas.
You will also collaborate with a research team of biologists, statisticians,
and population dynamicists, physical and biological oceanographers in
the development of research projects within the Tropical and Pelagic
Ecosystems Program. You will also be responsible for presenting results
to industry, and at national and international scientific and management
forums.
A PhD
or equivalent qualification or experience in quantitative ecology, fisheries
science, applied mathematics, statistics or a related field and
several years post-doctoral experience and well-developed knowledge
and completed research in quantitative fisheries science, and/or quantitative
ecological modelling and/or statistical modelling of biological populations
is essential. A significant record of research achievements as demonstrated
by timely completed work, peer-reviewed publications or public dissemination
of work showing advanced quantitative and modelling skills, innovative
data analysis and original applications are also required. A strong
background in the statistical modelling and analysis of ecological or
fisheries data is essential, as is a knowledge and willingness to be
involved in the development of appropriate field data collection programs.
An ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams is critical.
