The Dean is responsible
for academic leadership and the management of the School of Mathematical
Sciences, operation and future development. The University is seeking
an intellectual leader of international distinction with demonstrated
capacity to manage an academic organisation. The successful applicant
will be of outstanding international scholarly standing in the mathematical
sciences and have outstanding research leadership skills. In addition,
the person will have a record of effective general management. The successful
applicant will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships across the University,
with other universities and research institutions in Australia and overseas,
and with government and industry. She/he will have the ability to promote
the School and the University, and be a catalyst for attracting research
funds to the School. The School of Mathematical Sciences unifies activities
in the mathematical sciences across the University. Its purpose is to
promote and develop research, teaching and consulting in the mathematical
sciences (including mathematics, statistics, mathematical physics and
mathematical computation) and to provide a structure for collaboration
in these fields between the Institute of Advanced Studies and The Faculties.
The School comprises
the Centre for Mathematics and its Applications and the Department of
Mathematics. Both divisions have responsibility for research and postgraduate
education. The Centre for Mathematics and its Applications has the primary
function of a research institute in the mathematical sciences, fulfilling
both national and international roles in this capacity.
The Department of
Mathematics has responsibility for undergraduate and honours teaching
in mathematics in The Faculties. Conditions of employment: The successful
applicant will be offered a standard appointment as a Professor of the
University or a fixed-term contract for the period of the Deanship.
Normally the term of office as Dean is for a period of five years.
Salary: An attractive
salary package, which will include a fully maintained University vehicle,
will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
