Lecturer in Mathematics
The University of Sydney

The School of Mathematics and Statistics

Closing date: 17th January 2016

The University of Sydney is Australia's first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7500 permanent staff, supporting over 52,000 students. It is the only Australian university to have been rated well above world standard (5) in the mathematical sciences in all three Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation exercises to date.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is home to 65 academic staff with a support team of 10 professional staff. Our research interests include a broad spectrum of mathematical sciences and their applications. We attract outstanding undergraduate students including many talented students who go on to higher degrees. The large cohort of postgraduate research students and many overseas visitors benefit from, and help to sustain an, outstanding research environment.

The school has been afforded these positions due to recent funding success. Dr Zhou Zhang was awarded a Future Fellowship to work on a project on a Comprehensive Study of Kahler-Ricci Flows for the period 2016-19 by the Australian Research Council. We are appointing one four-year fixed-term standard teaching and research position in order to both cover Dr Zhang’s teaching as well as contribute to his research program.

To succeed, you will be a talented and well-qualified mathematician with expertise in any area that contributes to the project, particularly differential geometry. You will need to have appropriate skills and qualifications as outlined in the position description, including a PhD in pure mathematics.

If appointed, you will be expected to undertake duties consistent with an appointment at the lecturer level (Level B) on the Australian academic scale. This will include: publishing scholarly papers in international peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences; supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students; teaching a range of courses to undergraduate students; and applying for external funding.

Late applications will be accepted but cannot be guaranteed consideration.
