Applications are invited for the position of Director of First Year Studies in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, a large and diverse school with research strengths in many areas of mathematics and statistics. The school has one of the largest undergraduate enrolments across the University with over 2600 students enrolled in first year units of study.

As such you will be innovative, creative and committed to enhancing the teaching programs within the School of Mathematics and Statistics. You will also continue to contribute to research and scholarship in your area of expertise.

You will be responsible for organising and coordinating the teaching program (lectures, tutorials, consultation times, examinations and room bookings) for all first year units of study in the School of Mathematics and Statistics under the general supervision of the Head of the School. You will preside over a first year committee that will advise the Academic Program Committee on curriculum matters, including recommendations for changes to first year courses and be responsible for reviewing course content, texts, teaching methods and use of the computer laboratories. You will also be responsible for maintaining a student enquiry service providing general information and dealing with course and tutorial changes and assessment queries. This involves ensuring that all first year students receive a response to their email and face-to-face enquiries in a timely manner as well as coordinating and maintaining regular communication with students in a unit of study with regards to upcoming assessments and important deadlines, amongst other related topics.

To be successful in this position you will have:

  • a PhD in mathematics, statistics or mathematics education
  • a significant record of research achievement
  • demonstrated high academic standards, excellence in undergraduate teaching
  • the ability to organise a complex teaching operation at the tertiary level
  • excellent communication skills and an ability interact well with students and staff.

Highly regarded will be:

  • the ability to start by early 2015
  • familiarity with relevant student administration and academic board policies and procedures
  • previous experience as course coordinator or similar administrative role
  • a track record in successfully applying innovative teaching techniques.

The position is full-time continuing subject to the completion of satisfactory probation and confirmation periods for new appointees.

Remuneration package: up to $160K including Level C base salary $114K-$132K, responsibility loading, leave loading and up to 17% superannuation. Some assistance towards relocation cost and visa sponsorship may be available if required.
