Faculty of Science The Australian Research Council has funded a research project into advanced algorithms for statistical mechanics models through its Discovery Grant scheme. The aim of the project is to develop new algorithms for the study of lattice models in statistical mechanics and to apply these to a wide range of problems. In particular we wish to develop algorithms to study lattice models using transfer matrix techniques. A specific application will be to numerically study the so-called equi-modular curves, as defined by points in the complex plane where the transfer matrix has two or more dominant eigenvalues of equal modulus. We aim to develop a public software package for the automated calculation of such equi-modular curves. We will also study how various analytic properties (scaling functions etc.) of lattice models can be elucidated using numerical methods. Applicants are expected to have a PhD in mathematics, physics, or related discipline. Experience in computational statistical mechanics is essential and a publication record in this area is expected.
