Postdoctoral Fellow - Urban Systems Modelling and Simulation
CSIRO

CSIRO Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics

Closing date: 7th February 2013

  • Great opportunity for a near, new or recent PhD graduate with skills in computer based simulation modelling of urban or industrial systems
  • Be involved in research that is a major priority for Australia
  • Join CSIRO - Australia's premier science & technology research organisation

The Position

CSIRO is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow in Urban Services Simulation, to undertake physics-based modelling and systems simulation of different future scenarios to identify options and pathways to ensure future delivery of physical urban functions and services such as energy, water, shelter, infrastructure and transport. Working as a key member of a modelling team, the Postdoctoral Fellow will develop integrated scenario projection models for analysing impacts of endogenous and exogenous factors on key indicators of urban sustainability, resilience and productivity. These will also be integrated with geospatial information and tools.

Other duties will include:

  • Critically assess and synthesise the technical literature and identify key gaps that can be addressed by innovative research;
  • Cooperate with other scientists involved in modelling and simulation of urban services, and engage with internal and external stakeholders to determine research requirements and opportunities;
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research in conferences/meetings.

Location: Highett, Melbourne or Dutton Park, Brisbane
Salary: AU$78K - AU$85K per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: 3 year term
Ref. No: N12/04901

Requirements of the successful candidate will include:

  • Demonstrated capabilities in systems modelling and approaches such as system dynamics, network modelling, agent based modelling, Monte Carlo simulation, stocks and flows modelling;
  • High-level skills in computer programming languages or modelling platforms such as Mathematica, AnyLogic, R.;
  • High-level written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including demonstrated experience in preparing reports and research papers, as well as the ability to work in a team.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will join CSIRO’s Urban Systems Program in Melbourne and Brisbane, which hosts one of Australia's leading research groups in systems engineering and dynamics. This group applies its capability to a wide range of applications in climate risk, adaptation and impact assessment, natural disaster management, urban landscape planning, resource supply chains, and land use planning.
