The Centre in Statistical Science and Industrial Mathematics in the School of Mathematical Sciences will host the 14th MISG, a Special Interest Group of ANZIAM, from February 2 - 6, 1998.
Register now to take part in our foremost Australian annual problem-solving event, the meeting point of industry, business and applied mathematicians.
Background For those unfamiliar with the MISG, you can expect to be presented with around 8 problems from a variety of industrial and business sources. Teams are formed which proceed to work intensively on individual problems.
Outcomes The results of the week's labours are presented to the assembly, and are subsequently published in two different formats: one for those primarily interested in the process of the solutions (MISG Proceedings), and the other for those whose interest lies in what the solutions were for the particular business or industry (MISG Summaries).
Costs Registration is free to the academic participants. It is envisaged that, as in the past, some financial support will be available to interstate travellers. CSIRO will sponsor student travel to MISG.
Accommodation has been arranged at the Women's College (not only for women!) at the University of Queensland, just a 20 minute ferry ride upstream from QUT. There is also a regular bus service between UQ and the City. The cost at Women's College is from $42 a day. Other accommodation is available in the vicinity of QUT and a brochure can be sent on application.
The 1998 Applied Mathematics Conference is immediately after the MISG at Greenmount Beach Resort at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast and transport for MISG participants to this meeting will be arranged.
More information and Registration There is a brochure available from Professor McElwain (see below). Alternatively, you can browse the MISG 1998 website for both information and registration:
